Massage therapy has been around since the beginning of medicine.  Massage is mentioned by Hippocrates, the father of medicine, and Native Americans and eastern healers have used various modalities of massage to facilitate the healing process.  In recent years, we’ve seen a rise in the

integration of massage in physical therapy and other conventional forms of medicine. Although there has been significant increase in the use of massage therapy, more that 60% of the population has either never received a massage or has no knowledge of the benefits it has to offer.

Here are 4 ways massage therapy can be beneficial to you

1. Decrease stress levels

In today’s fast paced, information overloaded society, our minds are constantly in the “on” position. For many people, the central nervous system simply doesn’t know how to switch out of “the fight or flight” mode into our “rest and digest mode.” This constant state of agitation, can cause physical discomfort or anxiety. Deep Tissue Massage, Swedish Massage, and Connective Tissue massage can flip the switch from agitated and anxious to relaxed and happy.

2. Increase movement, mobility and reduce the symptoms of pain

Ever wake up with a stiff neck or find yourself with a muscle spasms?  Do you find yourself rubbing the muscles around your pain to release the tension? One study conducted by Cedars Sinai Hospital took blood tests before and after a 45-minute massage. Researchers found increased lymphocytes and lower levels of cytokines after the massage suggesting that the immune system was more active and inflammation levels were reduced.

Not only does massage feel amazing, but the effects can be felt long after the massage is finished. Improved circulation and reduced pain can have a dramatic effect on our sleeping patterns. It is much easier to fall into a deep, restful sleep if our stress levels are reduced and our everyday pains are held at bay for one more day. Sleep is step one in our body’s natural cycle of healing.

Beneficial for releasing chronic muscle tension. The focus is on the deepest layers of muscle tissue, tendons and fascia. Deep tissue Massage reduces stress hormone levels and heart rate while boosting mood and relaxation.

2. Sport

Geared towards active people, this type of massage is used to prepare for athletic activity and to recover after workouts or events

3. Prenatal

Helps to relieve backaches, headaches, hip pain and leg cramps. This is a health way to reduce stress and promote overall wellness during pregnancy. Woman with high risk pregnancies are advised to consult their doctor before booking an appointment.

4. Swedish

The most common type of massage therapy. The primary goal of Swedish massage is to relax the entire body using long strokes in the direction of blood returning to the heart.
