Hundreds of thousands of women are diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States every year. It is a scary and grueling process to endure. The brave, tough, and fortunate women who survive this condition and beat breast cancer are as resilient as they come, but the challenges do not stop when these women are cancer free.
The treatment to become cancer free often includes things such as mastectomies (breast/ breast tissue removal) and chemotherapy. Some of the lasting effects from these treatments can be weakness, poor
endurance, and scar tissue adhesions.
While physical therapy is a great treatment for strengthening and building endurance, many survivors do not know that physical therapy is a great resource to help with mastectomy scars. These scars can cause issues for years to come such as pain, pulling sensations, and limited mobility. This is especially true once the scars have adhered to the underlying tissue. The main treatments that would be put into place to assist with this issue would be scar mobilization techniques and flexibility exercises.
Here at Jones Physical Therapy we have treated these issues with great success. If you are a survivor still battling with or struggling from the effects of your fight with breast cancer and you want to achieve a higher quality of life, then give physical therapy a try!
