Look out for Number One

In my career I have had the privilege of working with people of all ages and from all walks of life. Most people come to me at a point in life where they want to make a change or they need help to move forward. That willingness to change, get out of your rut,

try new things and follow a new path makes all the difference.  It’s what leads to unexpected success, restoration of life quality and often inspiration for friends and family.

The will to change also makes the change sustainable. If a person really wants to change themselves and the motivation comes from within, then they will continue to work hard and improve even when their time at PT is over. We all love those shows like Biggest Loser, where people lose 100# and nobody recognizes them. PT is like that every day. Patients get results they never saw coming because they have been conditioned not to expect such big changes from seemingly simple solutions. Their friends and family are amazed and some of them come in for help too.

Many of the things we attribute to age, degeneration, old injuries coming back, bad weather or family history are actually just  products of our daily habits and can easily be reversed with some expert advice, a solid plan and a system with built in accountability.

To be sure, some things do run in families and my section on genetic testing and diet show that it’s important to know how your heredity can help or hinder you. But equally many, if not more things are caused by environment, habit and circumstances and yours do not have to be the same as your parents, grandparents and other ancestors.  Today we live in a world where we have more control and better choices than ever before.

As many of my case studies illustrate, there are lots of things you can do on your own, by making small changes to your daily life, to alleviate aches and pains and live better, be happy and help others. Lots of things you have been led to believe are age related or inevitable can actually be helped or eliminated by changing your daily habits. Even things that seem like the worst case scenario, can be fixed with technology (think joint replacements) and a little help from your friends at PT.

Because we are likely to live a lot longer than our parents  or grandparents generation, it’s important to adopt healthy lifestyles early so our longer lives can be fulfilling and enjoyable. Not only do we deserve to be happy and healthy, of equal importance is the happiness  and healthiness we can impart upon those people around us who we know and love.

Older generations turned to their doctors for health. What we are learning today is that there are other options when looking for solutions. Good medical care from your doctor, while essential,  is only one piece of the puzzle in terms of what you need to live a healthy life. Modern medicine still focuses on illness so your doctor’s job is to fix you when you become ill or broken. They are problem solvers. What about when you are well, who takes care of that part of your life? How can we give your Doctor fewer problems to solve? You guessed it, that part is up to you. Paying regular attention to your physical and mental health pays big dividends in the quality of your life and the lives of those around you.

The next chapter in your life is for you to write. Remember, big changes happen when you do small things over and over until they become habits. So try this: write 3 or 4 things you want to start doing today to make a change. They can be small things like take a walk every day (bring the dog too), or go to bed an hour earlier. Perhaps you are ready to go big and sign up for a yoga class or clean up your diet? Either way, make a quick plan, write it down, tell your friends and family and hold yourself accountable.
