The Cost of Physical Therapy

How much does Physical Therapy cost?
People often ask me this question. Many at this point are expecting a conversation about how much Physical Therapy is covered by their insurance plan and how many dollars are coming out of pocket in the form of co-pays, deductibles, co-insurance etc. At Jones Physical Therapy, we offer free (no dollars) assessments for those considering PT and we also work with your insurance company to help you determine exactly how much your course of therapy will cost prior to your start date, but that is not what this post is about.

The true answer to the question “How much does Physical Therapy cost?” is:
Time.

Why Time?

Physical therapy is different from many other forms of medicine in that it requires you to actively participate. Your therapist will ask you to take time out of your day and do the stretches, exercises and lifestyle changes that are going to make you better. Doctors often refer patients to Physical Therapy when they know an active recovery from illness or surgery is the best solution. They rely on the Physical Therapist to expertly guide their patient through their recovery and back to health.

How much time are we talking about?

A typical Physical therapy plan of care is three, one hour sessions a week for a period of between four and six weeks. In addition to the three hours a week you spend in the therapy office, you will be instructed and encouraged to do some exercises and stretches at home. Your Physical Therapist, depending on your condition and point in your recovery, may also advise you to take up, or resume recreational activities like walking, weightlifting or swimming. Patients specifically returning to sport or workplace will be advised on returning to modified or limited conditioning activities prior to full return to activity. You will need to find time for these tasks also.

PT is an investment.

In the same way we might invest in an account for our future retirement or join a gym as a New Years resolution, when patient attends PT, they are investing in their future good health. The ultimate goal of Physical Therapy is to help you learn the skills that will keep you feeling great and able to do all you usual activities now and also in the future.

PT pays off.

Many of our patients come to PT because they have tried other forms of treatment for their condition, They may also come to therapy because their doctor is recommending PT before proceeding to surgery or more invasive approaches to care. By following their Physical Therapists’ plan of care, ie doing the exercises regularly and making the recommended lifestyle changes, patients will find they are stronger, pain free and able to do the activities and sports they enjoy. Most people find PT to be safe, effective and even enjoyable!.

PT keeps working.

long after Therapy is over. After a relatively short period of treatment in PT, patients have learned a repertoire of exercises, stretches and activities, specifically recommended for them and their condition. These exercises are newly acquired knowledge that they take with them. These new skills and habits will help them continue to stay well and even improve their situation going forward.

Is Physical Therapy right for you?

So if you are considering Physical Therapy for back pain, a sports injury, joint replacement, or any of the other things we treat. Consider that for the best results, your biggest investment should be your time. Also know that the time you spend coming to PT is going to pay big dividends long after you have paid those co-pays, deductibles and co-insurance fees.
