If you’re anything like us around this time of year, you’ve probably been thinking about beginning a more active, healthy lifestyle. Perhaps you just need that push to start your journey to a healthier and happier life.We know the last thing people want to think about is not being able to perform the activities they enjoy the most. Activities like comfortably playing with their children and grandchildren or going for long walks in nature. Unfortunately, this could be a reality if your joints are not properly cared for.
You’re already aware that exercising can result in weight loss and a healthy heart, but did you know that exercising also nourishes your joints and can help them last longer?
Let’s use the knee for example. The knee joint has lubricating fluid inside that allows the joint to move freely without getting stuck. If the joint is not moving fully, the area not moving will not be nourished by this fluid causing the joint to wear down quicker over time.
Joints also rely on muscles that cross them to limit the amount of force going through the joint in order to ensure it moves more efficiently. If the surrounding muscles are weak, then the joint becomes less supported. The joint is then more likely to be put into positions that stress it and cause it to deteriorate faster. This in turn could make the joint more prone to injuries.
Fortunately, performing basic strengthening exercises guided by your physical therapist will not only lengthen the life of your joints but also speed up recovery from injury to help keep you active for longer.
Take your first step today to a happier, healthier life!
