Ways To Avoid Public Falls

Jones PT Ways To Avoid Public Falls

Falling in public is not only embarrassing, it is also a way to injure one’s self. To avoid falls in public, there are factors to consider:

1) Know your surroundings. People need to know the social situation they will be experiencing. For example, if an individual is going to an amusement park versus going to the movie theater. An amusement park requires a lot of walking, therefore if a person is unsteady on their feet/fatigues easily, there are pre-meditated actions needed. Going to a movie theater does not require much walking, therefore planning is not a major priority. This is all to say, be educated on what is to come.

2) Understand and be honest with mobility status. Many people are embarrassed to use an assistive device (cane, walker, etc.) in public, but that is when those assistive devices are most needed.

3) Always wear proper footwear. If the outside surface is wet from precipitation, one’s footwear should be closed-toe and have tread on the sole to avoid slips.

4) Understand vision status. Some people fall as a result of tripping over “not seeing (insert thing) there”. If a person is aware their vision is regressing, they should visit the proper healthcare professional to correct it.

5) Ask a physical therapist if unsure about safety. Physical therapists are the experts in human movement, especially safety. If a patient is unsure about a certain scenario, all that they need to do is ask. A physical therapist will know if a patient would be able to safely handle the situation presented, or at least offer advice to modify the situation and decrease fall risks.

If you or a loved one is concerned about falling and want to learn more, call our office at 985-792-5996 and we can schedule you a consult with one of our doctors of physical therapy.
